I started a new class Thrusday. During the class, the professor brought it to our attention that including this course, we have four regular classes left (I have a hour long check in class once a week, when I start my internship). It is really hard for me to believe that in five months, I will in all likelihood be done with my "taking classes" school career. I have been in school for nearly 20 years now!
I know my mother would love for me to get a PhD. But she can just keep dreaming. Because sometimes I think I would rather cliff dive into a pond full of alligators who haven't eaten for months, than think about forming a proper APA title page or putting together another power point presentation. Besides my grandmother is kind of confused, and I'm pretty sure she already thinks I'm a doctor. And that is what she tells her friends who my mother and I refer to as, "The Blue Haired Ladies Club". So that is as close to doctorhood as I'm going to get!
But don't get me wrong, I loved college. I grew up during my undergrad, made friends with the fiercest group of women that I can't imagine my life without, and have so many good memories. The donut factory runs, trips to Tuscaloosa, and Friday night parties with my friends! Then, going to grad school allowed me a chance to carve out an identity and a purpose for myself after I had moved to a strange, big city to be with A., and I felt like I was drifting. Drifting because I didn't have a job or friends, and had nothing to do all day but watch TV and sleep. And in those days, I knew my love for A. trumped all the restless and purposeless feelings I was having, but sometimes I still wondered if I would ever adjust to my new life.
So yeah its been great. But guys I am so DONE.
But I digress. The class I am in right now is Dependence & Addictions. I've been dreading this class because I feel like my whole life recently has been about dependence and addictions, you know? I feel like I could write a book on the subject. But I actually ended up liking the class a lot more than I expected, and there is so much information I can take away from this class. For example, one of our assignments is to write a paper after attending a 12 step program meeting. I was thinking I would go to Ala-non just to see what it is all about. Because there are so many things that still really get to me about my brother and sister-in-law.
And while it's not one of our assignments, the professor encouraged us to participate in a little experiment for five weeks, starting next week. She wants us to give up something we enjoy/spend a lot of time doing, so we can experience on a EXTREMELY small level what it is like to give up an addiction. I am always up for a challenge because I like to prove to myself that I can accomplish big things. So I'm definitely going to do it. But I was having trouble deciding what to do. I either wanted to give up social media (Facebook, Twitter) or Reality TV.
Both would be hard, I obsessively check facebook and twitter, and facebook keeps me in touch with my friends since I hate talking on the phone. But reality TV is my true love. I love watching it and I love talking about it. I'm even kind of amused that my husband is so annoyed by it. Oh it makes me laugh, and entertains me after a long night working. And when I really think about giving up reality TV, I get a little uncomfortable. I mean we are in the middle of some great TV guys. Let's call it the bad TV trifecta: Jersey Shore, Teen Mom 2, and any of the Real Housewives show. Guys, I would miss the Real Housewives of Atlanta Reunion, and The start of the Real Housewives of New York City premiere!
If I really want to push myself, I have to give it up. I would try giving up TV all together. But I don't live alone, and I can't ask A. to give up TV just because I'm doing an experiment. Plus the Superbowl is right around the cornor and I am not going to miss it! But not watching reality TV will cut my TV consumption by about 90%. I just worry that my poor little DVR won't be able to handle it all. But that is a risk I will have to take.
Just for a reference as to how hard this is going to be for me, just know that I went to a Catholic school for two years. And during those two years the nuns would ask us to give up something for Lent. I'm not Catholic, but I was all gung-ho for this. I decided to give up watching Home Improvement because it was my second favorite show. I couldn't bear the thought of not watching my number one favorite show, The Fresh Prince of Belair. But I didn't even make it one afternoon before breaking down and watching some Home Improvement. Oh Lardy, I couldn't resist some J.T.T.
I still think that is the first thing God is going to want to discuss with me when I get to heaven...You know that or the time I knocked out my mother's front tooth...
Guys, A. is going to be so happy. He doesn't seem to understand why watching women hold petty grudges and cat fight is entertaining, and I can't understand how he can't find it riveting! We are obviously incompatible.

hehehe, I hear you. Match caught me watching old episodes of The Secret Life of an American Teenager and he was flabbergasted. I have a weakness for cheesy abc family shows. I have no idea why. I know they're horrible but I can't help myself!
Good luck with your no Reality TV. I think it will be a great experience. OH and I also highly recommend Ala-non. Though I will say, sometimes the visits can be depressing, hearing the other stories. But it's also really eye opening. I've been to a couple of meetings and they were very helpful. Good luck chica, and glad you're not giving up social networking. I would miss you!
